Orange Scones

I made these for Christmas morning, and they were so delicious. I've been meaning to post them ever since but kept forgetting to bring my recipe book down to the computer. This recipe comes from a cookbook put out by the bed and breakfast association of Cedar City.

Lemon curd from Trader Joe's was my favorite spread inside, though we found that raspberry and blackberry jam were also quite tasty accompaniments. I didn't think to take a picture before we scarfed them all down, so you'll have to use your imagination.

Blend together:
3 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 1/2 t. baking powder
1/4 t. salt
1/2 t. baking soda

Add:
1 stick butter, softened
1 cup milk
1/2 t. orange zest

Knead about ten times until the dough forms a ball. Pat into a cake about 12 inches in diameter on a baking stone or heavy duty baking sheet. Brush with butter (or a beaten egg if you want a shiny finish) and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Cut into 8 wedges and bake at 400 degrees for 12-18 minutes or until golden brown on top and cooked through.
